About
My $10,000 Hat
It took me 16 years in sales before I made $100,000 in one year. I know the grind, the doubt, and the feeling of working harder than everyone around you while still falling short.
A prayer, and a diagnosis
In early 2019, I was planning my next chapter: opening a fitness gym. I spent months visiting franchises, and I prayed about the decision. I felt the Lord's impression that one particular fitness franchise was the right choice, and I signed the agreement.
One month later, on June 19, 2019, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
I was confused. Why would the Lord guide me toward a new business if I had cancer?
On November 11, 2019, I had surgery. The doctors expected me to be out of work for two months. Because of the fitness routine I had kept for 30 years, I was walking within a week, power-walking 5 to 10 miles within three weeks, and back at work in six weeks.
In December, I cancelled the franchise. I got all my money back except $10,000. Today, when I wear that franchise's hat, I tell people it's my $10,000 hat.
The blessing I couldn't see
In March 2020, COVID hit, and gyms closed everywhere. I would have lost everything, financially and emotionally. Instead, I stayed focused on my sales career and had the second-best year of my career, earning over $275,000. The cancer was a blessing.
The phone call that changed my direction
During COVID, I noticed a former Ricoh colleague posting personal development videos. He had gone on to Salesforce and earned over $1,000,000 in a single year. I called and asked him what motivated him. His answer: helping and serving other people.
I started applying what he taught. I got up early to read. I set goals. I managed my time better. And I began focusing on serving others. My life started to change.
A year later, I called him again. He told me about Brand Builders Group, where he had built a brand to share his talents with others. I joined too. I invested thousands of dollars and countless hours studying, reading, and learning.
